My step mom thinks her car might be low on it, how can I check it before driving all the way to auto zone for more?
The red light did come on, but she didn’t say there was any problems braking.

How do I check the brake fluid in a 2006 Chevy Cobalt?

Check the brake fluid resevoir under the hood by the firewall. On another note, if the car were low on brake fluid you would see the word "brake" illuminated in red on the dash when the parking/emergency brake was disengaged.

You didn’t say whether or not the brake pedal feels really soft or is moving a long distance before you feel the car begin to slow down. The brake fluid reservoir is in the engine compartment and will appear to be directly in front of the steering wheel once you raise the hood. If the fluid level is low, chances are good that the brake linings (front pads or rear shoes) are worn. Another potential cause of low fluid level is a leak.

look under hood for master cylinder.its on the driver side.look for a aluminum looking thing with a plastic clear looking container on top of it. with a black cap in white letters say brake fluid.it has 4 metal lines running to it.its attach to a large metal bowl looking thing call power brake booster. look at the clear container.remove black cap say brake fluid.see if any brake fluid is in it.if yes if real low add brake fluid to max mark dont over fill.if master cylinder brake fluid reservoir is bone dry.that is the clear looking container with black cap with brake fluid.you have brake leak some where brake lines or caliper or wheel cylinder is leaking.dont drive car. have car towed in and brake system checked out.any time brake light comes on you are having brake failure.
