I have a step brother who needs a good lawyer. His charges are premeditated murder and felony murder, with several other suspects in the case who are all gang members. He’s not really a gang member. So far we found a lawyer for 35k. Can we get lower? What other costs do we need to be aware of with lawyers so we can establish everything up front? Thanks.

What would be the ethical things for a defense lawyer to do in the following situation?
A defense lawyer is defending someone accused of a violent crime such as rape, murder, or assault, and the lawyer knows the client is guilty because the client confessed to him or he has access to evidence that clearly shows the client is guitly.
Is it unethical for the lawyer to try to get the client declared "not guilty" so he can walk free unpunished, or is the attorney’s ONLY obligation to his client?
Or does the attorney have a moral and ethical obligation to society to insure the guilty party is punished?
What is the bigger purpose: defending the client or defending society?

Is this a civil or criminal case?
I inadvertently copied some copyrighted images to a cd which I sold online (for .99). The buyer reported this to the copyright owner, who is now demanding 00 or he will sue me. He has threatened to get a judgement and then a lien on my house. I need to know if I need a civil or a criminal defense lawyer. Thank you.
It was indeed inadvertent – I had 2 files and copied the wrong one. A simple (and unfortunately expensive mistake). -

A question about becoming a lawyer?
I plan on becoming a criminal defense lawyer. Is it easier to find a job in a firm or start your own business. I hear both are pretty difficult and I know it does depend on how well you do in school. Any suggestions?

How do I get a lawyer?
It’s my first time getting involved with this whole law thing, so I’ll need a criminal defense lawyer. Since it’s my first time appointing one, I don’t know what to do. should I just randomly call up local firms and get a free consultation? or are lawyers who have web sites generally the better ones? I don’t know who is really good that can work things out for me to expunge or seal this record. Should i look up the yellow page for a lawyer snd find like 20 lawyers and give them my stories and see who has the best deal (price, their education, experience, etc)? Someone please help.

In the U.S., why is justice in a criminal case based upon how much the defense lawyer charges?
The more money you have, the more justice you can buy? Why can’t poor people have the same quality legal defense as do rich people?

Are there any criminal defense lawyers in La. willing to do a pro bono case???
My friend really needs some help. He’s been in prison for 6 yrs, and I know that is alot of time that has passed and there are deadlines and all. Thing is it seems that his rights were seriously violated when he was being questioned, and after being arrested. I am trying to help him find someone( a good attorney) who will listen to his case, and try to help him. He pled to get a sentence reduction(which didn’t happen), but from what I understood he made the plea because his family thought that is what would be best. That was coming from his family. I believe he is innocent. Please someone help.

Question on criminal defense law.?
Every time I bring up an interest in pursuing Law School and a career in criminal law, I hear the same broken record. People seem fixated on the idea that criminal defense lawyers rigorously try acquit people they know are guilty. I’ve never taken an ethics class and I don’t know the laws, but is this true?
Are lawyers supposed to receive admissions of guilt from their client? If a client confesses to his/her representation, wouldn’t that make it unethical to submit a plea of not guilty? For some reason, I have it in my head that clients, if guilty, are supposed to tell everything BUT the dirty deed for best representation. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance!
I’m not biased for/against defense lawyers. It’s not my area of interest, but it is interesting area of ethics nonetheless!
So the concept of a "plea of not guilty" is that simply a lack of a "plea of guily" which would otherwise be a waiver of jury trial?I ask because otherwise it seems akin to perjury, hence my confusion over the ethics of an attorney submitting a plea. Who is responsible for the plea? Attorney or client? For instance who decides to plea not guilty by mental defect?

Most effective way to try and clean up a criminal record in Utah?
The love of my life has a bit of a sordid past. He has two felonies on his criminal record which is making it really hard for him to get into the field that he really wants to work on now that he’s been on the straight and narrow for 15 years. It seems really unfair that these convictions should now prevent him from succeeding in a field that he’ll find extremely rewarding and fulfilling (Social Work). Neither of the convictions is for a sexual crime. Do you think it’s possible to get them expunged or sealed? If they were sealed, could he still be denied work over them? Should I try first with the state, or would it be better to just go straight to a criminal defense lawyer?
