In some cities there are organizations of lawyers who will work for certain clients on a pro-bono or free basis.
If you do not want a public defender then you need to get online and do a search in your area for these organizations.
Your chances of finding an attorney that will work for you on this basis
will depend upon the crime you have been charged with.
You might do well to go to a University Law Department in your city.
By contacting a member of the staff or professor who would be a licensed attorney, or even a graduate student ,they might be able to refer you in the right direction to locate an attorney that could assist you.
If at all possible you would be best advised to seek counsel, many
attorneys do not charge a fee for a consultation. Just as with a Doctor
you may want to get more than one opinion. From the information
you get you can decide which attorney you would like to have work
for you, if one is moved by your situation they may work for you at little or no fee or they may be able to refer you to someone who would.
If you a looking at a crime that could get you sent to jail, then you really need to find an attorney! Your reputation and your life are worth
whatever investment you would have to make.
Take the time to speak with:
1. A Law Professor at your local University; even if you have to stand in
the hall until a lecture is over! Find out who and where the criminal law courses are being taught. Your local University Law Professor will
have knowledge of who would be the best in defending you.
2.Look in your local phone book for Legal Clinics which are a source of
reduced fee lawyers.
3. Do Law research yourself into cases that are similar to your own.
all you have to do is a search based on the crime you are charged
with and read the documents. This will at least give you more insight
to your case and questions you would need to ask the attorney.
Good Luck!

you can’t. the reason criminal lawyers charge so much
is because they have the highest % of clients that don’t pay.
public defenders are usually right out of law school,
you did say a "good" lawyer meaning experience
